Computing Systems Efficiency Research

CSER is an undergraduate research group at UFT. We study methods, tools and architectures that make computing systems faster, leaner and more sustainable, and we publish our code and data openly so every experiment can be reproduced.

Research areas

Energy efficient computing

Measuring where time and energy go, from hardware counters and RAPL on servers to current sensors on microcontrollers.

Approximate computing

Trading a controlled amount of accuracy for speed, area or energy in arithmetic units, kernels and algorithms.

Hardware/software codesign

Designing arithmetic circuits for FPGAs and evaluating them together with the software that uses them.

Projects

Teaching tools

The group also maintains five educational RISC-V simulators used in the Computer Organization course. They run in the browser, in Portuguese and English, and follow the Patterson and Hennessy textbook:

  • Compiler: from C to LLVM IR and RISC-V, with control and data flow analyses, heat maps and approximate optimizations;
  • Arithmetic: integers, floating point and fixed point;
  • Processors: single cycle, pipeline, dual issue, Tomasulo and memory hierarchy;
  • Multiprocessing: cache coherence and atomic instructions;
  • Data level parallelism: vector processor, GPU and TPU.
